"It was a fantastic cross from Hackney and a terrific header from Jim Bentley," said McIlroy.
"But we missed a couple of chances as well which should have been taken, but unfortunately we didn't and it almost opened the door for Hereford.
"I knew Hereford were going to come at us especially down the slope. I've been here before and they always seem to do better going down the slope.
"That is why I changed my tactics just to get an extra body in midfield. It was a battle in the second half and I have just said to my lads we have to take our chances especially in the first half."
