The former Northern Ireland boss now hopes this win can catapult his side back into the hunt for the play-off places.

"It was a good win and I think we deserved it," said McIlroy. "It was great to be able to name Jevons and Mullin in the team together again because we have missed them after Paul's injury.

"They are a great partnership because as well as being good goalscorers they also work really hard for the team and are a real handful for defenders. It wasn't easy because Darlington made things tough for us, but we had the bit of quality up front and that made the difference.

"The first goal was a fantastic move and it gave us a great base to build on. We didn't have things all our own way but the defence did well and Barry Roche showed again why he is the best goalkeeper in League Two with two great saves."
