McIlroy targets January recruits

Morecambe manager Sammy McIlroy has revealed he is keen to add to his squad during the January transfer window."I've got the majority of my squad in place, and although I've also got to balance the books I'd like one or two more," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"I think I'd then have a good enough squad here to then kick on."

One of McIlroy's targets is 26-year-old defender Kieran Charnock, who has been on loan from Torquay for the past three weeks, scoring one goal in two games.

Another one who has impressed the former Northern Ireland manager is Jimmy Spencer, who is coming to the end of a six-month loan spell with the League Two club.

He hasn't had many opportunities so far but he's got great potential

The 19-year-old striker, who is a graduate of the Huddersfield Town academy, joined Morecambe in July and received praise from McIlroy for his performance against promotion chasers Port Vale on Saturday.

"That was probably his best one for us so far at the weekend," said the 56-year-old.

"He's a young boy who's still learning his trade. He hasn't had many opportunities so far but he's got great potential.

"It's something we'll have to look at over the next few weeks to see where we go with that one."
