Tom Barkhuizen fires Morecambe into play-off positions

Tom Barkhuizen netted twice as Morecambe secured a superb 2-1 victory over Notts County at Meadow Lane to jump into the Sky Bet League Two play-off places.

Despite winning just one of their previous six league games, the Shrimps showed no signs of poor form as Barkhuizen volleyed them in front after 16 minutes.

County did summon a brief response with Jon Stead seeing a header go inches wide from a superb Carl Dickinson centre.

But Morecambe ended the half strongly and goalkeeper Adam Collin had to be at his best to deny Cole Stockton on two occasions.

Magpies boss John Sheridan sent his side out early for the second half, but any hopes of a result were wiped out when the referee spotted a handball inside the area in the 55th minute.

Barkhuizen assumed responsibility and slammed the spot-kick straight down the middle to seal the visitors' win.

Substitute Vadaine Oliver's majestic late header was merely a consolation for Notts, whose fans booed the players off at full-time as they missed out on the chance to go fifth in the table.
