Morecambe could hand a debut to defender Tony Capaldi if he receives international clearance in time.
Fellow defender Laurence Wilson returns after serving a one-match ban but striker Phil Jevons (head) is still not yet ready to return.
Southend United boss Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:
"Last season they didn't win in their first six games and finished in the play-offs, they're a dangerous side.
"It's surprised me the position they are in in the league but I assure you, I know the manager, he'll have them riled up for Saturday.
"I'm very confident in my mind that they're going to start climbing the league, hopefully not with three points against us."
