Accrington's relentless charge for the Conference title took another turn for the better as they beat title rivals Morecambe.

Two goals in the space of three minutes from Andy Todd and leading scorer Paul Mullin made sure John Coleman's ambitious side were rewarded for a spirited performance.

Morecambe needed to beat their rivals in order to close the huge gap at the top of the table. But Stanley dominated from start to finish and thoroughly deserved their victory and the three points which took them a staggering 16 points clear at the summit.

And it seems nothing, barring an incredible losing run, will deny Stanley the chance to play League Two football next season. Coleman was understandably delighted with his charges, especially in front of the Sky TV cameras.

As early as the second minute Accrington pushed forward and Michael Welch headed over.

At the other end Ged Brannan had his powerful shot on the turn brilliantly saved by Stanley's shot-stopper Rob Elliot.

Jimmy Kelly went close for Morecambe in the 11th minute and Jim Bentley headed over seven minutes later.

But that was as good as it got for the visitors with Stanley making sure it was one-way traffic from there on in, goalscorer Mullin headed wide in the 17th minute and three minutes late Romauld Boco shot past the post.

It didn't take long for Stanley to break the deadlock with Todd on the scoresheet midway through the first half. Some close control resulted in the midfielder neatly placing his shot past Morecambe's Steven Drench.

And the former Blackburn Rovers keeper was beaten again as Stanley grabbed their second of the game moments later.

The influential Mullin beat Drench for power and the home side were sailing.

It could have been 4-0 at half-time with Gary Roberts shooting wide and Drench acrobatically saving Ian Craney's excellent 36th minute effort.

The re-start saw Brannan shoot over for Morecambe and Gary Thompson also went close, while at he other end Boco had two shots blocked, while Peter Cavanagh also had an effort charged down.

Morecambe sub Danny Carlton had a chance to reduce the arrears on the hour mark but he failed to hit the target. Roberts had Stanley's best chance as the game wore on and sub Andy Mangan fire wide in injury time.
