Altrincham 2 Morecambe 0

This game was a tactical triumph for Altrincham manager Graham Heathcote, who rang the changes in his desperately-thin squad to produce a 4-1-4-1 formation that stifled highly-fancied Morecambe, who lay in second position in the table at the start of this game.

The Shrimps started brightly, dominating the home side territorially, but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities with only a stinging drive from Wayne Curtis forcing Altrincham keeper Stuart Coburn into a save in the opening exchanges.

The Robins stunned the Lancashire side with two goals in four minutes on the half hour. Colin Potts was the provider of the first goal, picking out Colin Little, who brought the crowd to their feet with a magnificent strike from 20 yards.

Before Morecambe had time to recover, Darren Kempson's clearance took an unfortunate richochet off the referee to set up Altrincham's second goal with Little turning provider and Potts planting a clinical finish past the statuesque Robinson from 15 yards.

Gary Thompson should have reduced the arrears early in the second half after Coburn had flapped at Curtis' cross, but Altrincham responded with two good efforts from Gary Williams and Colin Little before the visitors finally began to turn the screw midway through the second period.

Jim Harvey will have been frustrated to see opportunities go begging as Gary Hunter, Michael Twiss and skipper Jim Bentley all should have done better. The home side were creating chances of their own, with the impressive Little a constant thorn in the Lancashire team's side.

Altrincham ultimately held out with a reasonable level of comfort, and have recorded three victories in succession after two initial defeats on their return to Conference football.
