A man-of-the-match performance from Shrimps' keeper Barry Roche denied promotion challengers Bury victory.

The Irish stopper produced another stellar show to deny a Bury side who showed why they are close to the top of League Two with some excellent football and swift attacks.

Unfortunately on this occasion their strikers came up against a giant keeper on top form as Roche saved his side on countless occasions and saw Morecambe extend their unbeaten run to ten games.

He was in action after just six minutes when winger Elliott Bennett was put clear on goal but Roche spotted the danger and came out swiftly to save at his feet.

Morecambe hit back with a threatening moment of their own when Michael Twiss produced a left-footer that flew narrowly wide.

Neil Wainwright then saw a cross-come-shot saved by returning Bury keeper Wayne Brown in what proved to be a rare threatening moment in a scrappy first 45 minutes.

The second half saw Bury take command. They almost went ahead straight after the restart when Bishop rose at the post to meet a deep cross but his header was brilliantly saved one-handed by Roche.

Roche again denied the Bury top scorer after 55 minutes, getting down well to block a shot after Bishop had pounced on a mistake by Henry McStay, before Michael Jones hit the side netting after being put through by Bennett.

Morecambe defender Dave Artell had to make a superb clearing header to prevent Glynn Hurst getting on the end of Bishop's neat chip and as the pressure continued Roche made another point-blank save on the line from a Ryan Cresswell effort.

Bishop did get the ball into the net a few moments later but saw the effort ruled out for offside and when Bury were denied a claim for handball it seemed that this was not going to be their night.

The Shakers came close to losing the game on 72 minutes when Stewart Drummond deflected a Twiss free-kick against the post.

In the final minute Bishop failed to find Hurst who was free in the penalty box and their chance of another welcome victory in their push for promotion was gone.
