A late goal from Jimmy Ryan saw Accrington clinch their first away win of the season as they claimed a 2-1 victory at Morecambe.

The midfielder struck with a superb 25-yard effort seven minutes from time to see Stanley maintain their stranglehold over Morecambe with their sixth win over the Shrimps in seven Football League outings.

Accrington started the game in style and took an early lead through skipper Phil Edwards with a 17th-minute penalty. Kieran Charnock brought down Terry Gornell with a misjudged tackle in the area and Edwards took full advantage as he blasted the penalty straight down the middle to beat Barry Roche.

Morecambe levelled eight minutes later when defender Chris McCready scored his first goal for the Shrimps. Craig Stanley swung in an excellent free kick from the left and McCready was unmarked as he headed past Ian Dunbavin from six yards out.

Charnock went close to giving Morecambe the lead with a header from another dangerous setpiece before the break, while at the other end, Edwards came close to scoring a second himself from a similar effort.

The second half was a drab affair with a draw looking the favoured outcome until Ryan struck his fifth league goal of the campaign.
