Morecambe bounced back from a disappointing defeat at Woking last week with a solid victory over play-off rivals Halifax Town.

The Shrimps, with skipper Stewart Drummond making a welcome return from injury in the middle of the park, were always in control after taking a 12th minute lead.

In a game of few chances it was a vital goal and was claimed by Morecambe newcomer Terry McFlynn.

A Kieron Walmsley free-kick from the right was misjudged by Halifax keeper Mark Cartwright and McFlynn ghosted in at the far post to head into the empty goal.

The remainder of the first half proved a tough contest in difficult conditions.

Morecambe had the upper hand for long periods with Drummond firing wide from 25 yards before Garry Thompson wasted a golden opportunity to make it 2-0 when he diverted a Dean Howell cross over the bar from just six yards out.

At the other end it took Halifax 31 minutes before they produced an effort on goal with Andy Farrell's looping header being superbly tipped over by Craig Mawson.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first with chances at a premium.

Drummond saw his shot cleared off the line by Craig Midgley although his efforts would have been ruled out for a foul. A minute later Halifax sub Jonny Allan sneaked in at the near post, but saw his effort diverted wide for a corner.

Morecambe's quest for a second goal was given a boost 20 minutes from time when the visitors were reduced to ten men.

Kevin Sandwith, who ironically turned down a move to Morecambe a few weeks ago saw red for a second bookable offence when he brought down home substitute Lee Dodgson.

Halifax were almost made to pay within seconds as Cartwright was forced to make two fine saves to deny McFlynn and Michael Stringfellow.

Halifax then produced their best effort of the game when a scorching Midgley free-kick forced Mawson into an excellent save.

The game finally saw its second goal five minutes from time when a great run from Stringfellow ended with the perfect lay-off for sub Nick Rogan, who slotted home his second goal in successive weeks to ensure the three points.
