An 83rd minute winner from defender Jim Bentley got Morecambe off to a perfect opening day's start against ten-man Woking.

The turning point came just eight minutes earlier when Woking defender Jon Boardman was shown an instant red card. The defender had brought down substitute Danny Carlton on the edge of the penalty area and referee Mr Richardson decided that he had been the last defender.

With Boardman heading for an early shower, the home side seized the initiative and gained their reward when Dean Howell won a corner on the left, Adriano Rigoglioso sent a cross into the penalty area and the ball fell for Bentley to volley into the roof of the net from eight yards.

Woking had good reason to feel aggrieved after giving the home side a difficult three-quarters of the match.

The Shrimps had got off to an excellent start when they went ahead after just eight minutes. Skipper Stewart Drummond pushed forward and supplied Gary Thompson on the right and his low cross into the goalmouth was converted by Rigoglioso.

Woking, beaten 5-0 at Christie Park last season, refused to be bowed and then had the better of the first half.

New striker Jefferson Louis went close with a header as they strived to get back on level terms.

The former Oxford United striker then forced a near-post save from keeper Craig Mawson on 23 minutes.

The Shrimps meanwhile showed their threat with Drummond forcing keeper Ashley Bayes into a full-stretch save following good work by Wayne Curtis and Thompson.

But Woking got their reward on 40 minutes when Louis gained possession on the edge of the area and hit a right-foot volley that had Mawson well beaten.

But with Boardman's sending-off, the game turned to Morecambe's advantage and Bentley gave them their reward.
