Morecambe moved up to third in Conference with a 3-0 victory over Margate.

But it was a far from vintage performance from Jim Harvey's in-form side although once they opened the scoring on 27 minutes they never looked in danger of letting their lead slip.

In the end it was another victory to add to the Shrimps superb home form which has seen them now collect 13 victories from 16 games with just one defeat against title favourites Yeovil..

Morecambe were on top from the off and both Adriano Rigoglioso and David Perkins both came close before Jim Bentley opened the scoring on 27 minutes.

A Rigoglioso corner from the right was only half cleared by the Margate defence and after Gary Thompson's first effort was blocked Bentley was on hand to hammer home his third goal of the season.

The home side came close again through Robbie Talbot and Thompson before they were gifted a second in first-half injury-time.

The goal came after a howler from Margate keeper Phil Smith, who saw his attempted back pass clearance rebound off Morecambe midfielder Lee Elam and he had the easiest of chances to slot home his second goal in successive games.

It was a strike that knocked the wind out of Margate although a second half mini fightback did give them something to cheer about on the long journey home.

To add salt to Margate's wounds, the home side added a third two minutes into injury time.

Substitute Wayne Curtis was through on goal but was denied twice by the excellent Smith, who could only hold his head in his hand out of sheer frustration as substitute Ryan Zico Black hammered home the loose ball to end the scoring.
