Both sides had chances to take full points in this seaside War of the Roses.

Scarborough started the stronger side with Scott Kerr almost putting them ahead in the first five minutes, before Keith Gilroy scraped the ball narrowly over the bar with a fine shot on the turn.

Morecambe quickly settled down however, and Keiron Walmsley raised their hopes when he sliced a long ball inches wide of the near post.

The fast end-to-end to play saw Scarborough's Robert Gill have a great on-target shot deflected onto the roof of the net after he had been ably set=up by Kevin Nicholson.

Wayne Curtis went close twice for Morecambe as they gained confidence and they almost took the lead in the 23rd minute when a free-kick by Walmsley was headed on by David Perkins, but Scarborough keeper Leigh Walker held the ball on the line.

The Shrimps went ahead in the 32nd minute after a neat cross by Michael Twiss found Walmsley on the spot to blast home a short-range volley, giving Walker no chance.

Walmsley almost increased the lead two minutes later but his effort was cleared in the goalmouth by Gilroy.

Twiss forced Walker to make a great save to his 15-yard drive as Morecambe began to have the edge on the run of play with the approach of half time.

For Scarborough, Gilroy, Ashley Lyth and Neil Redfearn each struggled to push the ball into the net in a goalmouth scramble before it was eventually cleared up field.

Morecambe continued to prove a formidable side after the break and were unlucky not to increase their lead when Wayne Curtis crossed to Garry Hunter, whose brilliant shot was finger-tipped over the bar by keeper Walker.

The equaliser came in the 59th minute when a free-kick found Nicholson who stabbed the ball goalwards, only for his attempt was blocked by Adam Sollitt - but he failed to hold the ball and substitute Chris Senior seized his chance to crack the ball into the back of the net from three yards with his first touch of the ball.

The goal triggered a catalogue of chances at both ends, with Twiss, Perkins and substitute Danny Carlton each going close for Morecambe, while Scarborough's hopes were pinned on Gill whose chance was smothered by a diving save from Sollitt.
