Drummond despair saves Southend

Stewart Drummond's unfortunate late own goal gave Southend a 1-1 draw with Morecambe.

Drummond diverted Sean Clohessy's cross from the right into his own net with seven minutes remaining to cancel out Phil Jevons' goal for the Shrimps.

Jevons netted early in the second half but was given a straight red card by referee Graham Scott for shoving Anthony Grant over in an off-the-ball incident in the 75th minute.

Both sides started brightly and Southend goalkeeper Glenn Morris denied Garry Hunter in the fifth minute.

Southend's only shot on target in the first half saw Ryan Hall denied by Barry Roche.

Jevons finished well from Lewis Alessandra to give Morecambe the lead in the 53rd minute and two minutes later Southend striker Liam Dickinson had a goal disallowed for offside.

Southend were roared on by their largest crowd of the season and Drummond's own goal drew them level after Jevons had been sent off but they were unable to find a winner and slipped to second in League Two.
