Ellison spares Shrimps blushes

Kevin Ellison maintained Morecambe's magnificent unbeaten away league run with a brilliant 82nd minute solo goal that salvaged a 1-1 draw at Torquay.

Ellison skipped away from the halfway line and raced towards United's goal, where he rounded home keeper Bobby Olejnik before slotting home.

It was a superbly-taken leveller and came only seconds after Morecambe had two off the line clearances.

Goalkeeper Barry Roche made a point blank reflex save to deny substitute Chris McPhee from six yards.

When McPhee followed up with a measured side foot towards the corner, Laurence Wilson made a superb goal-line clearance.

United had taken the lead through skipper and top scorer Lee Mansell in the 62nd minute after a bright start to the second half.

Billy Bodin, who rattled the bar with a shot in the last minute of the first half, split the visiting defence with a clever ball into the edge of the Morecambe penalty area, and Mansell swooped on the ball to sweep in his fifth goal off the inside of the far post and out of the reach of the diving Roche.

Late on, Roche made a great save to deny McPhee when he latched on to Bodin's wayward shot, and at the other end, Ellison blazed over the bar from the edge of the box.

Earlier in the half, dangerman Ellison forced a fantastic save from Olejnik before finally being rewarded with his cracking leveller.
